Understanding ISBN, LCCN, and Copyright Registration
Protect your work and ensure proper distribution with the right identifiers and registrations. This guide breaks down what you need to know.
Navigating the administrative side of publishing can feel overwhelming. Between ISBNs, LCCNs, barcodes, and copyright registration, there's a lot to understand. Let's demystify these essential elements.
ISBN: Your Book's Unique Identifier
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a 13-digit identifier that uniquely identifies your book. It's required for selling in bookstores, libraries, and most online retailers. Key points:
- Each format (paperback, hardcover, ebook) needs a separate ISBN
- In the US, ISBNs are purchased from Bowker
- Free ISBNs from platforms like Amazon restrict distribution to that platform
- Buying your own ISBN gives you publishing control and flexibility
LCCN: Library of Congress Control Number
An LCCN helps libraries catalog your book. It's optional but valuable if you want library distribution. The LCCN must be obtained before publication and is free from the Library of Congress.
Copyright Registration
Your work is copyrighted the moment you create it. However, formal registration with the US Copyright Office provides important legal benefits:
- Creates a public record of your copyright claim
- Required before filing an infringement lawsuit
- Enables statutory damages and attorney's fees in litigation
- Costs are modest (currently around $65 online)
Barcodes
A barcode is the scannable image that encodes your ISBN. Retailers need this to sell your book. Most print-on-demand services generate barcodes automatically, but if you're working with a printer directly, you may need to supply one.
What About Amazon's Free ISBNs?
Amazon, through KDP, offers free ISBNs for books published exclusively on their platform. The trade-off: that ISBN cannot be used elsewhere, and it lists Amazon as the publisher. For most authors seeking wide distribution, purchasing your own ISBN is the better long-term choice.
"Getting these details right from the start saves headaches later. Think of it as building your book's foundation."
